ACTION PLAN: HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS

Senior Year is IMPORTANT: your grades do count towards graduation and 4-year University/College admissions; failing to earn C's or better can jeopardize your admission status. Keep up your GRADES and have good ATTENDANCE all year long.

Graduation Status: make sure all credits have been earned. See your counselor for credit recovery if you lost 1-2 credits in a course needed for graduation.

Apply to 4 year Universities/Colleges: make a list of colleges with your majors
Apply early and within the Filing Periods:
CSU: October 1st – November 30th (www.csumentor.edu)
UC: November 1st – November 30th (www.ucop.edu/pathways)
Private/Trade/Out of State: vary – check online
- Write an outstanding personal statement/essay on College Applications.
- Make the most of personal references: ask people who know you; prepare a neat and legible reference form; and give your references plenty of time to write an outstanding recommendation on your behalf (at least 2 weeks).
- Be ready to interview, audition, or submit a portfolio.
- Keep a copy of all your application materials in a file for EACH college.
- Have your SAT I Reasoning (and SAT II Subject tests- Math 2 and 1 other- for UC) OR ACT (include Writing for UC) scores sent to the schools you applied to. If necessary, seniors may take/re-take the college entrance exams, either October, November, or December dates.
- NCAA: athletes need to update their NCAA profile and have official transcripts and college entrance test results sent to NCAA (Code 9999)

- Scholarships: do your research and apply to as many scholarships as possible:
Scholarships are listed in the Guidance Office (ROOM 10)
- Financial Aid: FAFSA: www.fafsa.ed.gov filing period is January 1st – March 1st
- Apply for PIN number for signing FAFSA electronically www.pin.ed.gov

OTHER REMINDERS:
- Attend "College Night" at Sonora – September 14th, 2009.
- Attend "La Habra Goes to College" – October 24th, 10am-2pm at the La Habra Community Center.
- Use ADVANCED for Free help with University/College applications and FAFSA forms – for appointment, CALL (562) 691-2117.
- Visit the University/College campuses that you applied to or will be attending. Take a tour, ask questions and "get a feel" for the atmosphere where you will be spending the next 4-5 years.
- Request final, official transcripts from Mrs. Hobbs (Room 11) to be sent to the college you'll be attending and make sure you meet the University's deadlines.
- Check your University email address for all communication.
